How can you help your kids through a divorce?

On Behalf of Huson Law Firm, PLLC | Apr 11, 2022 | Divorce |

Getting a divorce is not just a big change for you but your kids as well. There are many negative psychological effects that kids can suffer from because of divorce, and it is up to you as their parent to shield them from those possible consequences. To help you look after your kids throughout a divorce, here are a few tips you can follow:

Only inform your kids about the divorce if you are certain

Receiving news that your parents are getting a divorce can be a hard pill to swallow, but so can the news that the divorce is no longer happening. These kinds of uncertain changes can cause a lot of confusion for children, so be sure you are certain of things before telling your kids about them.

Keep your kids from blaming themselves

It is a common reaction for a child to assume that they are the reason their parents are divorcing. When you tell your kids about the divorce, make sure you make it perfectly clear that it is not their fault. Even if your child does not express this concern, it could be something they harbor internally for a long time.

Get your kids to talk about it

To be able to address any problems your kids may have, you first need to know about them. Encourage your kids to be open about divorce so you all can work through it together. If you are having trouble getting your kids to talk, seeing a therapist may be the best option for you.

Stay involved

For parents without primary custody, it is essential to remain present with their children. One of a child’s biggest fears in a divorce is never seeing a parent again, so you want to be sure that you are taking action to convince your children that their fears are unfounded.

Prepare to do what it takes

Some kids are better suited to adjust to divorce than others. No matter how hard your kids take the divorce, be sure that you are doing everything possible to show them the love and support they need to avoid the long-lasting consequences of a divorce.
