To avoid divorce, at what age should you get married?

You may be thinking about the link between marriage age and divorce, and it certainly is there. This is part of the reason that the general age of marriage has been moving backward over recent decades. It has been found that getting married young correlates to higher divorce rates.

As a result, many young couples are putting off marriage until after college or after they’ve started a career. Those who get married right out of high school or even in their early 20s are becoming rare. Is there a certain age that people should shoot for if they want to lower their divorce odds?

Getting married at 32

Some studies have found that an important point is age 32. Prior to this age, the odds of getting a divorce tend to shrink with every year that someone waits. Instead of getting married at 22, for instance, waiting 10 years can make it less likely that the couple will get divorced.

However, 32 is an important point to mark because the odds of divorce start going back up again after this point. It’s clear that waiting indefinitely does not always reduce divorce rates. In fact, the odds of divorce tend to climb by 5% every year beyond 32.

Part of the reason for this could be that older people are more used to being independent, so marriage may feel constricting. You also have to consider the fact that many individuals getting married in their 40s or 50s are getting married for the second time, which carries higher odds of divorce.

If you do end up getting divorced from your partner, you need to take the time to carefully look into your legal options.
