The role of child support in joint custody arrangements

On Behalf of Huson Law Firm, PLLC | Apr 22, 2024 | Child Support |

Life after divorce introduces many overwhelming changes to a person’s life, especially if children are involved. As you begin this new chapter in your life, determining the best arrangements for your child becomes a primary concern.

Joint custody is a popular choice among families, allowing children to maintain strong relationships with both parents. However, even when both parents spend equal time with their children, financial obligations can still vary significantly between households. This is where child support enters the picture to ensure that the child maintains a consistent standard of living in both homes.

Factors influencing child support

Calculating child support payments in joint custody depends on several factors.

  • Parental income: The court scrutinizes each parent’s wages, bonuses and dividends to determine how much contribution they will make to cover their child’s expenses.
  • Time spent with each parent: In a shared custody arrangement, children typically split their time 50/50 between their two households. However, a different variation of this arrangement may warrant more financial support from the other parent.
  • Children’s needs: Children grow, and their needs change. The costs of raising them, including health care, education and any special needs, play a crucial part in determining how much child support is necessary.

When it comes to joint custody arrangements, child support is not just a simple transfer of money from one parent to another. It becomes an intricate process that aims to ensure that they have a stable lifestyle regardless of which parent they are with at the time.
